Track of the Day: Kitty VR – Dimensions

KITTY

Kitty VR

Todays track of the day comes from York starlet, Kitty VR, now perfroming with a full band this new track with live video recorded by the excellent Nathan Riley throughout the late night one day not long back. Kitty’s whispery and feather like vocals which are as soft as velvet with a back drop of psychedelica which adds to this track’s mesmerising charm.  It is simply wonderful, chilled and adds to a great ambient soundtrack of any stressful day you may have had. Sit back relax and zone into this wondrous talent.

Track of the Day: Wild Front – Two

89768749_1136055906732606_3956421274896433152_nIf you are a regular of the Northern Radar shows then you will know that these guys are one of our favourite bands to book and last year they came and did one of our most favourite shows to date in the Northern Radar era during Independent Venue Week 2019 along with a visit from Steve Lamacq too! It feels like its been a long wait for new material from the Southampton outifit. This new release ‘Two’ is certainly a change up in to what they have released so far which is a more 80s pop beat but the ever effective indie pop sound with blasts of funky bass and the effortless voice of Jack Williams. Here’s to more of the same, just don’t leave it so long this time eh fellas!

Artist of the Day: NOISY

NOISY

Based down in Brighton, you may remember these fellas under a different guise. Yes formerly High Tyde minus Louis, this now trio have remodelled themselves. Now known as NOISY, they have built a new sound and changing up how you imagine indie music to be from the likes of Macklemore, big , pulsing drum and bass beats to hip hop and that poetic sounds not seen much of since The Streets, its all in there.

Their debut EP ‘Press Space To Play’ exploded into the world recently which is back to back bangers big enough to fill any dance floor or get you moving down at the gym. From the first track on the EP ‘Bring The Drums Back’ to ‘Afraid’ the final track on it, each offer something a little different throughout and you just cant help be excited by a sound they have created and being at the forefront of a genre they are making their own.

After the first listen you are hooked and have become a band that have fast become part of my must see live categories. Having been away for so long since High Tyde, I know full well that they have more big tunes to burn. They will certainly be pushing their way to the forefront of the music scene and with their brand new single out today (27th March 2020) ‘Oi (ATM)’ is a dirty track that furthermore makes them not to be missed.

Track of the Day: TalkMore – Sadsadsad

TALKMORE

Talkmore – Picture by Murry Deaves

If you are yet to stumble across TalkMore yet, then you are in for a treat. Their latest single which is out today is a five minute beauty. Daisy Allen’s vocal is one that makes you stop and sit up every time and with this it is no different. The follow up from their last release, the epic ‘VAARA’,  is a wonderful ballad that makes you just want to grab your loved ones for dear life and wave a lighter up in the air. Its a track that captures everything you want with a slow sway through until the end which builds up into this epic finish, worthy of any set closer to any gig from one of the freshest, most exciting new bands right now.

Artist of the Day: The Feens

The Feens

Right before we went into lock down we saw these boys from Scarborough take to the stage in blades of glory, playing two sold out nights in their hometown and in between all that performing on Soccer AM in what has been a whirlwind start to the year. Swirling indie anthems with big poppy choruses that get stuck in your head, these guys have become a machine.

It has been two years in the making seeing them get on stage and create what are now these big songs from the likes of ‘Freedom’ to ‘What Are You Dreaming’ driving them forward with the blistering poppyness of Blossoms with the ever endearing notes of The Smiths. The band mix the melodic with epic riffs throughout their set and it goes without saying that they are making waves on the North Yorkshire coast right now.

Latest single ‘How It Falls’ is another successful release that could capture a nation, setting the tone and summing the band up nicely as to how their year is set to be –  full of blistering energy. As we all head back out into our normality this is a band that you can imagine a few years down the line and requesting as one of the indie dance floor fillers of any indie clubnight up and down the country, you mark my words!

Its fair to say you don’t hear of many bands coming out of Scarborough but this could be the start of a great trend.

Track of the Day: Marsicans – Sunday

Marsicans – Photo by Sodium Films

Northern Radar were lucky enough to welcome these fellas back to play what was meant to be a SXSW warm up show at the beginning of March before you know what started to cause all its problems. Marsicans latest release, written during their times last across the pond in Toronto and New York, tells the tale about the importance of being around the right people, regardless as to where you are in the world. I think we can all agree that this is a message that we can all relate to in these difficult times and as per usual, Marsicans are a band that we all need in our lives to help keep us smiling and feeling good. Never has a band made me smile over the years as these fellas have done and I hope this latest single ‘Sunday’ does it for you too.

Debut album ‘Ursa Major’ available to pre order now – out 22nd May 2020
On tour in October:

Artist of the Week: Naked Six

Naked Six

Its been a bit busy for me on this side which then ended up not getting chance to write up our artist of the week for last week but I am back on it! This week we have to just talk about Naked Six, a band full of exuberance and a great energy that have a stock of brilliant musicians in their families which make this lot super exciting.

They are based in York and the standard of their sound and music in general are already sounding up there with some of the best around in such a short space of time and as well as making a name for themselves in York, word is already spreading into London, playing a handful of gigs there already, including Camden Rocks festival as well as gigs all round the country.

This there piece of Seb, Caleb and Tom bring together a highly skilled unit which has sprung to life to create what is a real classic rock sound that sounds straight out of the 1970s rock n roll era capturing that of the brilliant Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones and a bit of Jimi Hendrix in there too but putting their own modern spin on it. From one of my favourite tracks, ‘Revolution’ which blazes into live from start to finish and their new track ‘The Way I Feel’ you really get are blown away by such talent. These guys are constantly drawing in the crowds and I say it to everyone when I mention these guys that they really won’t be playing small venues for long as stadiums beckon.

Artist of the Week: The Shimmer Band

The Shimmer Band

Dazzling with a golden shiny jacket and shades to boot. The live show blew people away at this years Leeds and Reading festival and it took me by no surprise that it was any other way. These boys from Bristol have been building a name for themselves all year and just seem to be getting bigger and better every single time.

They are band that come armed with catchy anthems in their set with new single ‘Sunkick’ possibly one of the biggest to date with a huge gospel like chorus that beams out the world. Great indie rock n roll swagger and other recent big tracks ‘Freedom’ and ‘Shoot Me  (Baby)’ prove this which draw from all angles of the likes of current breakthrough band Blossoms to the big hitters of Kasabian scream at you in their repertoire as well as a real psychedelic shimmers of Primal Scream too.

They are a band that for me are right up there as one of the biggest potentials to be the next Blossoms and take the music world by storm heading into 2017 and how can you ignore their rise and support from the likes of the guys at This Feeling. With that backing and their biggest tour to date in October, who knows where the next year will take them. Just don’t be surprised when their selling out venues all next year! You heard it here.

Artist of the Week: Clay

Clay

This week sees the incredible band that is Clay feature as artist of the week. From Leeds, this four piece have already conquered a fair amount in a short space of time, having toured so much and playing numerous festivals including Reading and Leeds last year and featuring quite high up on the bill of the BBC Introducing stage. They have attracted a lot of attention from all angles of the music industry within their first couple of gigs and with still a vast amount of attention flying their way.

They are a band who offer so much oozing with R’n’B beats and soulful tones of lead singer Joe Harvey.  These guys are not just your generic indie band, they have an armoury that possesses so much more. They have teased fans with ‘Sun Dance’, the poppy ‘Oxygen’ along with ‘Stay Calm!’, a single that swings between various genres and just recently the band have released their debut EP ‘Heaven’ which includes some of their best material to date. From the beautiful lead single ‘Honest’ to ‘Nothing Happened’ and ‘Why?’ all three tracks again offering a plethora of poppy dynamic material which many upcoming bands should be envious of. Their sound is slick and as their recent and successful first headline tour proved, their live show is right up there too.

Clay are a rare band that you can’t label as to quite what they are, something that they have aimed for from the outset. It’s what keeps them fresh and people (including myself) holding their breath with anticipation for new material. Greedy maybe but always worth the wait! Let’s see what happens next…

Artist of the Week: Hello Operator

Hello Operator

Hello Operator

I don’t think I could have started this without writing about these guys first and foremost. Two of the first Northern Radar gigs that I put on back in 2014 were headlined by Hello Operator. From the first time I saw them I loved them that much it just felt like the right thing to do! These guys are a super talented four piece from York and currently all set to break as the next big thing from the city. It’s been a while since York had such an act to be as excited about  since it’s last breakthrough act in Benjamin Francis Leftwich and of course Shed Seven back in the 1990s. From everything I have seen so far it is possible that Hello Operator could and I believe shall gain such a similar cult fan base as the mentioned Sheds have managed throughout the years as they continue to tour the UK, having not only completed a headline tour for This Feeling, supporting Darlia and Frankie & The Heartstrings and performing at festivals too from Isle of Wight to Reading & Leeds Festival wowing audiences with their ferocious heavy rock n roll sounds who sound like the musical spawn of Royal Blood and Jack White. The gritty and bold in your face guitars and the raspy vocals of charismatic front man Max Dalton who sure knows how to tell a tale.

From the catchy ‘Stephanie’ that will no doubt become a big hit and caught the eye of many along with the Rage Against the Machine-esque  current single ‘Operator Hour’ to one of their first tracks ‘Black Blooded Child’, the band have not only an array of tracks that will blow you away but also have full of big choruses and likely to cause mayhem at a music venue near you very soon.

The secret is out about the next big guitar band the UK has to offer and it goes without saying that you should make no secret of them either. Don’t be shy and be sure to catch them with every opportunity you have!
